  4.     Like spitting, public chewing may wind up on the wrong side
  5. of the law in the sternly ruled island republic. The government
  6. has banned the manufacture, sale and importation of chewing gum.
  7. Mere possession of the stuff is not illegal yet, but offending
  8. sellers face fines of up to $1,200 and importers could get a
  9. year in jail. Gum, explains a government spokesman, "causes
  10. filthiness to our public facilities."

  12.     Singapore's subway trains have been halted several times
  13. recently when wads of chewing gum jammed their doors. The gum
  14. lobby argues that gum does not clog doors, people do. The
  15. government is unmoved.

  17.     Gum fanciers arriving from abroad must declare any they
  18. have with them on their customs forms. They will be allowed to
  19. bring in small amounts for their personal use, but the
  20. government reserves the right to define how much that may be.
